Standards and Technology Matrices for ELA
English Language Arts (ELA) is an important topic for all ages. As technology increases, it is important to combine ELA with these advancements. Thankfully, this is being recognized and implemented into public schooling. For example, a 5th grade standard and technology matrices for Florida is "LAFS.5.RL.3.7 Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem)." This standard, and those similar, can be seen all over the nation. In Omaha, this was taught as well. Due to my teachers having previously instructed and demonstrated these, I feel as if it will be easier to implement in my future classroom. Different standards and skill sets will vary based on the students' ages, but I am thankful that my prior experience has allowed me to be prepared for this.

MEAs on CPALMS
One resource available in the CPALMS educator toolkit is Model-Eliciting Activities (MEAs). These are lesson plans or activities where students apply knowledge to real world problems and implement knowledge they already know to solve a problem. These build great skills in children and introduce them to productive struggle. I especially found the STEM related MEAs interesting because this is a growing field where young ages can now learn the basic skills! As a previous civil engineering major, I found this very fascinating and inspiring.

Mindomo
Mindomo (https://www.mindomo.com/is a great tool for students of all grades. This is a concept mapping tool which is a great planner for visual learners or complex projects! It can be used for brainstorming, outlining, essay planning, lesson plans, etc. Overall, it is a great tool which I can see myself implementing in my future classroom.

  1. Hi Morgan. That's interesting that you talked about the tool to analyze writing. I don't think I have ever used it in any of my classes. Is sounds like a great way to get students more interested in theme writing. I also think the idea of using MEAs in the classroom to engage students and help them apply the lesson to real world situations is a great tool. The Mindomo tool looks like it would a fun and interesting way to help visual learners better grasp a lesson, especially essay planning. That would be great tool to have in a classroom. I really enjoyed reading your blog!

  2. Morgan,
Your blog was very fun to read. I like how the standard that you chose talked about the influence of visuals and multimedia on text. Being able to understand and incorporate pictures and such into work can be a very useful tool for students moving forward. I also really liked learning about and exploring mindomo. I have never heard about it before, but when I clicked on the link, I really liked what that program brought to the table. Great Blog!

  4. Hi Morgan! I similarly talked about in my blog post about MEAs. I agree that this is a great activity to enhance children's skills such as critical thinking. I never heard of mindomo and think that would be a great tool to help with children's concept maps to understand topics. Good job!
